Mineral Resources Authority

Papua New Guinea
Commenced in
2007

The aim of the project was to design, develop and implement an integrated Geological and Mineral Resources Information System (GMRIS) at the Mineral Resources Authority of Papua New Guinea. The system strengthens data management and data dissemination through trained staff and the provision of procedural handbooks, manuals, and guidelines. The specific aim of the technical assistance was to develop, train, and document data management procedures for the implementation of a Web-based Geological and Mineral Resource Information System, accessible through the Intranet and Internet.

The actual services provided encompass the complete cycle from the institutional assessment to the design, programming, implementation, and training of the Web-based information system:

  • System analysis (IT environment, software, database magement systems, etc.)
  • Collection, conversion, and integration of available digital data
  • Data quality analysis
  • Database and application design and system development
  • System implementation, data consolidation and verification, and database population
  • Development of a system implementation strategy
  • Capacity building and training

The design of the GMRIS allows serving the Intranet and the Internet simultaneously while integrating different kinds of digital and spatially referenced data available at MRA. A robust, easy-to-use GMRIS - adapted to the requirements and conditions in PNG - has been designed, programmed, tested, and implemented at the MRA in December 2007.
